Is the Rio Celeste Waterfall Closed? Here’s the Latest Travel Update
What’s going on?
Heavy rains at the end of May triggered landslides and falling branches along the main trail to the iconic Rio Celeste Waterfall in Tenorio Volcano National Park. For safety reasons, the park authorities closed access to the area on May 30.
Partial reopening in June
On June 2, the park reopened access to most of the trail, including popular spots like:
- Teñideros – where the water turns turquoise
- Blue Lagoon (Laguna Azul)
- Borbollones – volcanic bubbling springs
However, access to the waterfall itself remained restricted while safety assessments continued.
Waterfall access: now partially open
As of June 13, the stairway leading to the Rio Celeste Waterfall has been partially reopened. Visitors can now descend partway down the staircase to enjoy a beautiful view from a designated platform. The lower section remains closed, and park staff are monitoring weather conditions closely. If it rains heavily, the area may be closed again temporarily.

- 🕐 Arrive early: Park hours are 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with a daily visitor cap. Morning visits offer the best lighting and fewer people.
- 👟 Come prepared: Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes. The trails can be slippery, especially after rain.
- 🌧 Check the weather: Conditions change quickly, and the park may close waterfall access again for safety.
- 📸 Pack light: No food, no drones, and no loudspeakers allowed inside the park.
